Recruiting immigrants living in Greater Halifax

The Greater Halifax area has become home to many immigrants. Their inclusion and retention are essential for the growth of our local economy. Some are starting their own businesses; others are job searching, potentially bringing motivation and a world of experience to your organization. Landed immigrants, also called Permanent Residents, are entitled to work in Canada with no additional authorizations. They only need the regular orientation your company would provide to any other employee.

Immigrant Settlement & Integration Services (ISIS), formerly MISA  and HILC , is the leading provider of services to immigrants in Nova Scotia. The organization works with a pool of skilled newcomers who are looking to integrate into the local employment market. ISIS offers a variety of programs to employers:

Candidate referral: Employers who need to recruit employees are welcome to send specific job postings or job descriptions for ongoing recruitment. ISIS will review its data base of job seekers and pre-screen candidates before providing a direct referral.

Work Placement Program: ISIS also offers the Work Placement Program where a newcomer professional will work with a local employer for 6 weeks, full time at no cost.  Employers are able to assess the skills of a potential employee “on-the-job” and the participant obtains valuable Canadian work experience.  Insurance is provided by ISIS.

Workplace Culture Program: The Workplace Culture Program provides managers and staff with training and tools on workplace culture and diversity through information sessions, workshops and resources. This program is currently offered at no cost for the employers.

English in the Workplace: The English in the Workplace Program offers tailored English Language Courses to immigrant employees in the workplace. The instructors work closely with the employer to assess the work related language training needs of the employee.  English in the Workplace is offered at no cost to the employer.  To qualify employees must be permanent residents or naturalized Canadian citizens.
